No version of this dossier that ever existed can be taken down, not even by me. In this page I explain how it works.

A traditional website consists of three main parts: a database, a server that provides readers with content from that database and a name registry that maps the website name, such as next-dossier.ar.io, to that server. For this dossier, all three parts are far more robust than for a normal website.

The data for all versions of this dossier is stored on the Arweave blockchain, a cryptographic economic protocol that incentivizes perpetual and immutable storage of data. Today, the protocol holds 278 million dollars in value, and it would be worth significantly less if flaws were detected or exploited in it.

The server is not only one, but several, called "gateways", that can serve data on Arweave. You can check this by accessing the dossier from other gateways:

Each website version is committed to cryptographically. The version prior to when this page was written has commitment fYj_wbglE-gUGlzocof_4vruKFoZc1tAPKzMS-iTcxY. You can access that version perpetually, for example, at https://turbo-gateway.com/fYj_wbglE-gUGlzocof_4vruKFoZc1tAPKzMS-iTcxY. There is nothing I can do to remove it.

The final piece of the puzzle is the name registry, called ArNS (Arweave Name System). It is a smart contract (on the Solana blockchain) that maps domain names to owners. I bought the next-dossier name for about US$30. This means I am the owner and the only one who can choose where the next-dossier name points to. That is how updates happen: they are deployed, and then I change that pointer to the newest commitment. (Because I never did this before, I took the easy route and the setup service had permission to change that pointer until today, when I kicked it out.)
